Are Copic Markers Expensive As Everyone Thinks They Are?

Are Copic Markers expensive as everyone thinks they are?

Ask any artist out there just how expensive can Copic Markers be and most of them will make the argument that no matter where you look whether it's online or at your local art store, Copic Markers can go anywhere from as low as $5 to $10 or more. The main reason you’ll have difficulty finding Copic Markers lower than $5 is a result of the Copic Marker makers Too which is located in Japan has authorized all Copic distributors in the U.S and Canada to sell their Copic Sketch or Copic Classic Markers for no less than $5.

Most of our readers would agree that $5 is a lot of money just for a single marker especially when there are many other alternatives out there. You also have to consider other fees that come with selling these markers which will run up the price a little more.

Even the Copic Ciao style markers are less expensive. Let's compare the other marker brands out there:

  • Copic Sketch Marker - $7.99
  • Copic Ciao Marker - $5.50
  • Chartpak Ad Markers - $5.45
  • Spectrum Noir Marker - $4.00
  • Prismacolor Premier Marker - $3.25
  • Prismacolor Premier Color Pencil - $1.29
  • Faber-Castell Pitt Artist Pen - $3.60
  • Faber-Castell Polychromos Pencil - $1.60
*These prices are current as of this writing. Prices are directly from Amazon.

Just comparing the prices above, you can clearly see that Copic Markers are more expensive. From the list of markers above, only the Copic and Spectrum marker brands are refillable which is definitely a huge positive when it comes to using those brands. As for the other brands including the pencils, once you’ve used them up, you will need to purchase another. These costs can add up, the logical decision would be to purchase the refillable marker along with the ink and this will make the marker last much longer.

If you do your research further on some of these brands, you will notice that some of them only come in sets of six or more. Especially the Spectrum markers which you won’t find them sold individually. The price for a set of Spectrum markers is usually around $35 or more depending on where you find them. A Copic Marker set will cost you around $60 so no matter how you look at it, Copic markers will always be more expensive.

In the end however, if you’re more concerned with your budget then going with one of the cheaper brands such as the PrismaColor Premier Markers (individual markers) or Spectrum Noir Marker sets would be your best option. If you’re trying to get more quality and usability out of your markers than Copic sets are definitely the way to go. Copic Markers are considered to be the highest quality marker in the market today and no other marker comes close. Copic also comes in a lot more color choices than any other marker or colored pencil brands. With that said, Copics are probably still the best choice if you can afford them along with a refill set.
